Advising clients on the best ways to build and maintain the right income stream for their retirement today involves both a growing list of investment options and groundbreaking research that challenges some long-held industry assumptions.

Michael Finke, Ph.D., a professor of wealth management for the American College of Financial Services and its Frank M. Engle Distinguished Chair in Economic Security, is one of the leaders in the field.

In the first episode of the Ask the Retirement Expert, Finke sits down with ThinkAdvisor’s Janet Levaux to highlight the latest trends in retirement income and financial planning – and what advisors should discuss and consider pursuing with their clients.

In this podcast, Finke and Levaux discuss:

  • How advisors can help clients protect their retirement income given the risk that (1) they might outlive their savings (longevity risks) and (2) could experience negative portfolio returns late in their working lives or early in retirement (sequence of return risks).
  • What issues advisors should keep in mind when it comes to strategies for Social Security claiming.
  • Why (and how) different fixed-income investments and annuity offerings might make sense for clients given current trends in inflation and interest rates.
  • The growing need for lifetime income protection as fewer individuals have pensions and thus are becoming more vulnerable to market and other risks.
